Sidney Alford had been working with explosives since the 1970s. He was considered the pioneer in water projecting disruptors driven by high explosive which are used in bomb disposal - basically a small amount of explosive propels water downwards into the fuse of an explosive device. The water travels at such speed that it punctures the housing of the bomb. His explosives have been used all over the world in active and former war zones and have saved numerous lives by destroying unexploded ordinance.

This series of photographs was made in his secret test quarry in the West Country documenting him testing a new explosive device that was in development. The process of mixing and packing the chemicals in his lab to setting the devices and finally detonating them.

Alford died in 2021 at the age of 86.
